The Prayer Plant

Every once in a while you can find a true gem at Home Depot. That is what happened when I found my Calathea Maranta (prayer plant). Turns out when you buy a plant just for looks and don’t know how difficult the care is for them, it could lead to a true disaster. I bought my planty not knowing anything about Calatheas. Once again, I went home and started doing research and let me tell you, I immediately regretted buying this plant. I was watching expert plant bloggers tell me that they cannot even keep these dramatic plants alive.

The first few weeks I was thinking I was doing great and everyone else was crazy. Until the beautiful leaves started browning and yellowing on the tips. I panicked and went back to google to figure out what was the reasoning behind this. Turns out, Calatheas don’t love tap water. Luckily, that week, we got a lot of rain in Arizona (very rare) so I brought my planty outside for some natural sky water!! I then went to Costco and purchased some distilled water for when we don’t get any rain. Ever since I switched out the tap water, my prayer plant has been thriving. It is now one of my largest plants and is getting out of hand. I tell you all of this because I want you to know that you should never be scared of a challenge. Trust yourself and do your research.

Tip: A huge part of this plant is how much sun (in-direct) it gets as well as the watering. I like to let my Calathea dry out completely. I find myself only watering it a couple times a month, and I always include plant food.

I hope this helps you on your journey with Calatheas, if you ever have any questions feel free to email me or DM me on Instagram.
